Developed by KO_OP and published by Double Fine Presents, GNOG was originally titled Gnah. The official announcement of GNOG was made at the horizon conference. In May 2017, the game was released worldwide for several consoles like PlayStation, Xbox One, iOS, and Microsoft Windows.  GNOG earned positive reviews from critics and players on average. It’s a weird but wonderful game that has been developed incorporating lots of style and verve.

What is GNOG about?

It’s a 3- dimensional puzzle game that is set in a tactile environment full of toys and secrets. Players will encounter minsters as they explore the environment to get more puzzles. The game’s filled with eye-catching designs, an intense soundtrack, playful interactions, and rich visuals.  Developers have taken inspiration from real-world toy designs. In this game, every GNOG head is filled with secrets and has to be discovered. For instance, spin a bookcase to see a heap of old coins piled together or slide levers to navigate a wrecked ship through outer space or crank a wheel to cook on the stove – these are various playful interactions and encounters that generate a feeling of excitement among players, not to forget it also rewards them with surprising consequences. Incorporating a dynamic and accentuating soundtrack in the background that intensifies with every level, the surrealism incorporated in this puzzle game will have you turning heads.  Developers have added 9 various music levels in this game, to ensure it never feels monotonous playing this game. The soundtrack is dynamic and uniquely created. Every level of this puzzle game is a different handcrafted experience. Also, the game lets you switch between standard play and VP support while playing.

Gameplay

At every level of GNOG, you would find life beginning as a little parcel that unravels itself to discover a box of puzzles underneath. In simple words, these puzzles are similar to those Japanese puzzle boxes that have to be arranged inappropriate ways in a specific order making sure every piece fits together to open them up. However, GNOG incorporates the same principle, the only difference being it’s not that simple and dry. Players can find a variety of other content in the game that makes it so interesting and intriguing.  The game provides absolutely no instruction to players as to how to unravel these boxes or puzzles. Players suddenly find themselves thrown into boxes, leaving them to figure out how to unbox them. As such, the first few seconds on every level will be a process of orientation because you need to understand what you are seeing in front of you.  If you are wrong, you would suffer any consequence. Also, if you take too long to solve a puzzle, no time limit would prevent you from doing so. Players are encouraged to wander around and find out what can be done with the puzzle boxes and take as much time as they want to. Once you have figured out how to poke and prod things, you can try unravelling the box in a specific order to solve the puzzle, thereby unlocking the box.  Exploring the open environment and surroundings is fun and delightful. The visuals and graphics make the surroundings just so charming that players can never get enough of that view. Each box is colourful, distinct, and filled with contents. It’s surrealistic and abstract to the maximum degree possible, especially when you successfully solve a puzzle only to find out the box singing out to you while rings of various shades dance in the background.  The flawless work of aesthetics we find here makes us go amazed. We simply can’t take our eyes off this beautiful VR aspect that developers have introduced into this game. Despite all, GNOG is never sickening. The raw escapism it offers in VR certainly is one of the most effective aspects or techniques of the game that catch the attention of all players.  GNOG is never frustrating because solving the puzzle boxes isn’t too tough. Once you learn how to unravel one box, it feels so rewarding and satisfactory that you immediately set out in search of the next puzzle box. What players have to learn first is how to figure out the unravelling process. Often there are moments when players have no idea what to do next, but the no-stress environment makes things easier. If you keep poking around long enough, surely something insightful would happen.   There are a few puzzle games that are designed around conflict with the player. In this regard, GNOG is more collaborative. It isn’t merely a battle of wits between players. Playing GNOG feels as if the developers wanted players to comprehend the game and succeed at every level and gently get to the solution they have been looking for. Also important to note here is that GNOG never feels condescending. Nowhere would you feel like the game is dictating your tactics or dominating? How to solve the puzzle boxes ultimately comes down to the players, fetching them with rewards and surprises when they ultimately do it.
